The Ritual Committee of Congregation B’nai Israel is pleased that we will be worshiping together for the High Holy Days. We are committed to making the environment a comfortable one for all members and guests attending services and to maintaining the dignity of the services and our sanctuary. We ask that you kindly observe the following:
1. Women who are called to the bima are asked to wear head coverings (available in the lobby).
2. A Talit should be worn at all weekday morning, Shabbat morning, and holiday morning services and all day during Yom Kippur (including Kol Nidre). Your Talit should be removed before entering the restroom. Jewish women over thirteen may choose to wear a Talit. Note: We have limited Talitot – please bring your own if possible.
3. Please make certain that all beepers, watches and cell phones are either in vibrate or off positions. In an emergency, please leave the sanctuary if you must make or receive a call.
4. On the High Holy Days, please be prepared to present your tickets to the usher at the lobby doors. This is an important security precaution.
5. Please follow the directions of the ushers. These volunteers help maintain the decorum and your comfort during the services.
6. We ask you to refrain from wearing perfumes and colognes. Scents can be difficult for many people, especially those who are fasting.
7. The doors of the sanctuary will be closed during the chanting of the Haftarah, the Rabbi’s sermon, the Amidah and Kedushah and certain other prayers and special presentations. Worshipers will not be seated while the Ark is open, when the congregation is standing in prayer, and when the Rabbi is addressing the congregation. Entering and exiting the sanctuary at these times is improper and disruptive to other congregants. When the doors are open, take your seat quickly so as not to disrupt the service.
8. While we are proud of the warm and familial feeling in our congregation, we request that talking be kept to a minimum during all services especially when entering and exiting services. We must respect that services are in progress and respect all congregants who are praying.
9. We love children and ask you to be responsible for their behavior in and around the sanctuary. Please remember that it is very difficult for small children to sit quietly for an extended time. Take them for a short walk or sign-up in advance for babysitting or for the Jr. Congregation service so they have age appropriate activities while you continue your prayers.
Observance of the above enhances the beauty and dignity of our services and makes a more meaningful experience for all in attendance.
