(Delivered on January 8th)
Shalom Friends of CBI,
This coming Shabbat at CBI is better labeled a Shabbaton. Shabbaton has the implication of a special Shabbat. Indeed, this coming Shabbat is truly special, because you and the folks in the wider Jewish community can enjoy and participate in four unique gatherings from the beginning of Shabbat on Friday to the end of Shabbat on Saturday evening. I know that your Rabbi will be tired at the end, but it will be a very fulfilling and fun Shabbat. I hope you will come to one or more of these great Shabbat events.
The First Experience, Musical Kabbalat Shabbat Service with Shirah Burque Ensemble
Friday 5:30-7:00pm, January 10th in the East Social Hall: This is our third Friday evening musical service since November. This Shabbat our ensemble leader will be our violin player, Miamon Miller, joined by Clara Byom on accordion, and CBI member, Miranda Jacobson on percussion. I will invite you to sing with me beautiful melodies and niggunim from Kabbalat Shabbat and others that ‘m’hader’ beautify the service. Some of the melodies are deeply familiar while others are new and inviting. The main focus is to leave you feeling joyous and hopeful. It’s been a tough week in the news. We need the rest of Shabbat more than ever. As always, services are free and open to the entire community. 5:30 to 6:00pm we will have wine and cheese and other refreshment provided by the CBI Sisterhood. Yeah!!
The Second Experience: Singing around the Sabbath Table: Learning the Group Singing Traditions of the Shabbat Meal. Friday 7:15-9:00pm, January 10th in the Adler Lounge
Come learn and enjoy the singing traditions around the Shabbat table as shared by Rabbi Dov. This is the first of 5 Shabbat dinners (see below) which will provide participants with a musical literacy of the Sabbath at home traditions as we enjoy a delicious Shabbat meal provided by the Garcias. Each participant will receive a copy of the new commemorative CBI Shabbat Bencher (Songster) (pictured below). Each meal will feature the opening Shabbat rituals: Shalom Aleichem, Birkat Cohanim, Kiddush, Ritual Washing, and Motzi and will conclude with Birkat Hamazon. (If you don’t know them, you will learn them.) During the meal we’ll enjoy some relaxing conversation as well as learning a selection of Sabbath melodies for your Shabbat table.
- January 10 – Opening Ritual Melodies of the Sabbath Table
